Brrr, Its gettin Cold!
Again, I apologize for the infrequency of the posts, but life here has been fraught with excitement and adventure.
So where to start, hmm… Well, lets start with the weather. Cold, not like artic cold but autumn cold. Frost. Weve had 2 light frosts and a hard frost last night. The ol’ temp gauge says we were down to 27. Up till now the garden has been covered with plastic and protected. The cold weather plants are doing great; kale, carrots, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, chard, spinach, etc.. are fabulous. Even with the frosts they are good!
Alas, the tomatoes, zucchini, pumpkins, eggplants, etc… are no more, but the potatoes are divine. With the cooler weather we have had the stove stoked and dome toasty.
Mice. We have been overrun with mice. The cooler weather seems to be driving them inside. We have trapped many in the Hav-a-hart device, turning them loose outside only to see them reappear mere hours later, dining at the table. Ugh! So we have resorted to a temporary desperate measure of old fashion Victor traps. SNAP! Bam! and thus the mice are no more. Now, at Gina’s behest, we have acquired via my good friend and fellow forward looking thinker Jon M., 2 lovely 10 week old kittens. Frieda and Diego (aka Chico), or Jeffery and Maude depending on our cinematic or artistic mood. The girl was named for her lovely white moustache that matched her little white feet. They are skittish and prone to hissing, as Greta seems intent on terrorizing them ut are settling in nicely. Greta is learning everyday how to be more compassionate and loving with our fellow creatures when she isn’t in solitary confinement for chasing the kittens.
Dixie, has no problem at all with the kitties they play as if they were of the same species!
In other news, the leaves have changed and are near ‘bouts gone.
After a lovely weekend with Gina’s parents Otto & Dianne who were accompanied by Dianne’s sister Terri and her husband Jay and their Son Christopher, things are back to normal.
The weekend was a blast! We ate to our hearts content, drank loads of homemade wine that Otto broguth up and traveled around the roads of NY and VT to see the leaves changing color.
Highlights include taking the group to see my show at the Bar Antidote in Vergennes, VT and having Christopher accompany me on a 1hr plane flight around the house and the Adirondacks!
Truly spectacular!
Otherwise, life has been quiet. We did get a couple of the house extensions stained.
We’ve brewed up a batch of Nut brown ale, and have reserved a spot at the VT Home Brewers association annual apple press. At the end of the month we will be going to Essex to get 5 fresh gallons of heirloom apple juice straight from the press to make hard Apple cider!
But in all truthfulness, I think we are just all plum tuckerd out!
Till next time,
ciao!
